Today, MMS recognized Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013.  It grew out of Phyllis’ story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. Orange Shirt Day

On Friday, September 30 Mitchell Middle School is recognizing Orange Shirt Day. All students and staff will be receiving an orange shirt when they arrive that day. Orange Shirt Day is a Canada wide event that encourages awareness about residential schools and the impact they have had on indigenous and Canadian culture. Terry Fox Run

Our Terry Fox Run is scheduled for Wednesday, September 28 during the last two periods of the day. On Wednesday, students are encouraged to bring a Tooney for Terry to receive a temporary tattoo and for a chance to wear their hat for the day. Also, some grade 8 boys and girls have volunteered to shave their heads to support the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research. Today, MMS students and staff celebrated Character Day . Character Day is all about encouraging kids to have a growth mindset and making sure all of our kids know ”Everybody is a star.
