Good evening parents of students at Mitchell Middle and Mitchell Elementary – this evening we were informed of a safety concern that we would like to ensure you are aware of.
It was reported that, while walking home after school today, a Mitchell Middle School student was approached by a strange man who asked the student to have sex with him. The man was described as having brown skin, a long black beard, and wearing a blue turban. He was driving a newer black four-door Honda or Hyundai car. The student ignored the stranger and arrived safely home.
The RCMP were notified by the parents of the student and are investigating. In the meantime, all parents are asked to review safety recommendations for their children who walk home or play outside in the Mitchell community, including:
- Children should never get into the car of a stranger.
- If a child feels threatened for any reason, they should contact a trusted adult immediately.
- Children should always be aware of their surroundings and be cautious if an unknown person approaches them.
- Children should try to walk in groups and well-lit areas, making it easy to find help if needed.
On Friday, all Mitchell teachers will review these safety procedures with their students as well. Out of an abundance of caution, we will expand our supervision before and after school for the next few days as well.
If you have any information about this incident, please be in contact with Steinbach RCMP (204 – 326 – 4452).
